Magnesium is Magic for Photosynthesis

Magnesium is Magic for Photosynthesis

For the past few weeks, I’ve noticed my 4 year old affectionately sprinkling small amounts of sand into all the gardens and pot plants she can reach. One day, I asked her what she was doing, and she replied “giving the plants some Epsom salts”.

Magnesium sulphate (aka Epsom salts) can assist with germination, and Magnesium is at the heart of the chlorophyll molecule – so is literally essential for photosynthesis and a key determinant of photosynthetic capacity.

When you increase a plant’s photosynthetic capacity, you move more sugar to the root system, which will largely be sent out through root exudates resulting in increases in bacterial populations. When you increase bacterial populations in soil, well, magic happens… the entire plant becomes more resilient, nutrient dense and medicinal for us humans lucky enough to consume it.

Who knew a 4 year old would be so darn intuitive?!

Bottom Line

More on Magnesium in future posts,

Stacey.
